Rav Moshe Shternbuch: Mesira During COVID-19 Is A Serious Aveira

(Old News: from May 1, 2020)

Free Translation of the words of Rav Moshe Shternbuch shlit”a:

We must protest the atrocity (pirtzah) which has become an issue recently regarding the aveira of mesira. Many people are deluded in thinking that it is permitted to report to the governmental authorities anyone who violates the governmental law. This is certainly not the case. Rather, one must ask an expert Talmid Chacham in every instance of possible harm to one’s body if the particular circumstance constitutes pikuach nefesh in order to permit reporting to authorities which would (otherwise) be (an aveira) which is chamur shebechamuros (of utmost severity), and one cannot permit this severe thing without asking a Talmid Chochom in any instance of (potential) bodily (assault).
